Job Description: Ground Crew Member – Commercial Glider Operation

Position: Ground Crew Member
Department: Operations
Location: Superior Municipal Airport
Reports to: Ground Operations Supervisor / Chief Pilot

Job Summary:
As a Ground Crew Member for a commercial glider operation, you will play an essential role in supporting safe and efficient flight operations. Your primary responsibilities include managing aircraft preparation, launch, recovery, and overall maintenance of gliders and tow planes. You will also ensure that all operational areas, equipment, and ground support tasks are performed to the highest safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Aircraft Preparation:
    • Assist in the inspection and preparation of gliders and tow planes before each flight.
    • Ensure gliders are equipped with necessary safety gear and instruments.
    • Secure and inspect towing equipment and connections for safety and reliability.
    • Conduct pre-flight checks on aircraft and equipment, ensuring proper functionality.
  • Launch Operations:
    • Coordinate and assist with the launch of gliders, including handling launch ropes, tow lines, and winch systems.
    • Work closely with pilots to ensure smooth and efficient launches.
    • Follow established procedures for safe launches and handling of aircraft on the ground.
  • Recovery and Parking:
    • Manage the safe recovery of gliders after flight, ensuring proper positioning and parking.
    • Inspect and secure aircraft after landing, ensuring they are stored properly.
    • Assist with debriefing pilots after flight to discuss performance, maintenance needs, and flight conditions.
  • Maintenance and Ground Support:
    • Perform routine inspections and minor maintenance tasks on gliders, tow planes, and ground equipment.
    • Help identify and report mechanical or structural issues, facilitating timely repairs and maintenance.
    • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including hangars, storage areas, and equipment.
  • Safety and Compliance:
    • Follow all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure the safety of the team, pilots, and aircraft.
    • Assist in maintaining operational records and logs of flight operations and maintenance activities.
    • Ensure all equipment is stored and maintained in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Customer Service:
    • Provide excellent service and support to customers, including assisting with briefings, flight preparations, and answering questions about the operation.
    • Maintain positive interactions with pilots, staff, and visitors to promote a welcoming atmosphere.

Qualifications:

  • Identification card and proof of clearance to work in America. 
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting and carrying equipment (up to 50 pounds), sometimes in harsh weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and emergency procedures in aviation environments is an asset.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours as needed.

Working Conditions:

  • Outdoor work in varying – sometimes extreme – weather conditions.
  • Early mornings, weekends, and holidays may be required based on flight schedules.
  • Ability to work in an environment with potential exposure to loud noises and aviation equipment.
Compensation

The hourly rate of pay is $15 per hour. 
Ground crew members also have an opportunity to earn points by completing certain assigned tasks, which they may redeem for flight instruction.
