What is the principal driver of the economy in Superior?

Superior has a long history as a mining town. The Resolution Copper Project, owned by Rio Tinto and BHP, began exploration in 2001 as the company pursued a reopening of the Magma Coper Mine, which closed here in 1992 after 80 years of operation. In 2004, the project discovered ore deposits nearly 7,000 feet below the earth’s surface. To quote the company’s website, the ore ‚”represents one of the most significant untapped copper deposits today, with an estimated copper resource of 1.787 billion tonnes at an average grade of 1.5% copper. The mine has the potential to supply nearly 25% of US copper demand.” The project is the area’s largest employer.
